Scannographies

Scannographies, This particular body of work represents the last five years of my practice in photography. I’ve been questioning myself about the concept of what we call a photograph and the meaning of the mechanical act of capture itself. I am looking to provide to my photographic work a new conceptual approach, and through scannographies, as a temporal denial and refusal to use a regular photographic camera, I am still able to call myself a photographer. By only using a flatbed scanner on the skin's model -no external lighting, nor lens or aperture to control- I ended up discovering this 'magic kingdom of a candle light'. This is a statement of pause, a way to take some distance of the overwhelming reality and get the chance to think about the main source, the light and the subject, the eager attitude to really get someone soul almost from the very skin. Within the current context of massive production of images due to the arrival of the digital era and despite the fact that each piece might take days to be composed and completed, the process took me back to rediscover the meaning of patience, exactly what some time ago used to be a synonym of photography, instead of the present immediacy.

BEYOND THE COCA LEAF (RAISING COCA AND HOPES IN BOLIVIA.) Coca leaf has been grown since time immemorial in the forest-covered mountains of the Andean region. In Bolivia, the largest concentrated area of coca cultivation is Los Yungas. Its main vocation has always been the agriculture, but in recent years a “cash crop green fever“ has turned all the surrounding area into coca leaf plantations. Peasants and their families abandoned traditional crops and became into “cocaleros” (coca growers). Even migrants from other regions are relocating to Los Yungas to cultivate coca for the opportunity of quick cash. The number of cocaleros increased considerably since 2006 when Evo Morales —an indigenous coca growers´ leader— became president, adding his personal support defending coca tradition continuously from U.S. prescribed anti-drug policies. Nowadays, coca cultivation is legal —though controlled— in Bolivia. *Coca leaf (also the raw material to produce cocaine) is considered sacred for the Andean culture and is used in many rituals as important part of an ancestral heritage. But despite its production provides better incomes, coca plantations in excess cause serious deforestation, soil erosion and chemical pollution.
